If you want good, fast food to go then look no further. Here’s our guide to the best takeaway food in York.

Exhibition Square, with William Etty's statue in the foreground and the Minster behind Bootham Bar in the background.
Fish and chips
THE Yorkshire classic: ask for one of each (ie, a piece of fish and a portion of chips) with mushy peas – also known as “Yorkshire caviar”.
The best “chippy” in York is – and we’ve done some exhaustive research on this one – Fish King on Eastholme Drive in Rawcliffe. Fryer Tucks on Haley’s Terrace is also worthy of mention.
For a sit-down meal we’d recommend Wackers of York, on Gillygate. And as the first two mentioned are a bit out of town we’d recommend Mr Chippy on Swinegate for our favourite city-centre fish and chips.
Pizzas
No argument here: Ali Gs on Tower Street. Best for price; best for cheap deals; best pizza toppings and free delivery. What’s not to like?
Indian food/curry
Bengal Brasserie on Goodramgate just gets our nod ahead of the Viceroy on Monkgate and York Spice on Bishopthorpe Road.
Kebabs and burgers
Efe’s wagon in St Sampson’s Square came consistently out on top in our reviews. La Bodrum on Bootham got an honourable mention.
While we’re on the subject of food generally only eaten when drunk, the best post-pub nosebag in York is unquestionably the jacket potatoes served up from the van in Exhibition Square on an evening. Highly recommended.
Hot sandwiches
The meat sandwiches served up by Tony Neary Butchers at Clifton Green are beyond compare. Nearys recently won a raft of awards in our Best Pies in York poll.
Chinese takeaways
For value for money it has to be Golden Dragon (King Street, York). The best food to be had is from Maxis, out at Poppleton, but it’s a drive from the city centre and it ain’t cheap.
