Not to be confused with the wide open space west of the Minster, this eastern Minster Yard is most notable for the Deanery and the National Trust’s Treasurer’s House.
The Principia, the headquarters of the Roman Ninth Legion in the imperial fortress of Eboracum, once stood in this vicinity, as did the original Archbishop’s Palace. The latter’s ruins can still be seen in Dean’s Park and some now make up the modern Minster Library.
You would be forgiven for thinking the Deanery is an original Queen Anne building, but it was in fact built in 1939. The Dean of York Minster’s previous residence, on Deangate, is now a prep school.
Minster Yard provides good close-up views of the Minster’s Octagonal Tower and the Treasurer’s House, which can be accessed from round the corner on Chapter House Street.
