Where to stay in York

Bootham | City Centre | Holgate | Tadcaster Road/Dringhouses | Acomb | Heworth | Fishergate/Fulford

Hotels, hostels, bed-and-breakfasts, guesthouses… York’s got the lot, spread over the city and varying in price and quality. There really is something for everyone.

Rather than review individual hotels – an expensive exercise for people who live in York – we’ve broken down the city into different areas so you can find a corner of York that suits your needs.

The rest is up to you – although we can recommend a few sites to help you find the best deal for your York hotel:

lastminute.com – ideal for finding a hotel at, erm, the last minute
Hostelbookers.com – good for, erm, booking a hostel.
Hotelclub.com – which runs a reward points-style scheme giving you money off future hotel bookings

The Grange Hotel on Bootham

The Grange Hotel on Bootham

Bootham
Possibly the finest Georgian street in England, Bootham is also the hub for lots of small hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs in York. Not far from the train station if you know the shortcut (across Scarborough Bridge and through Marygate car park) and very close to the best city centre shops, restaurants and historic pubs.

Bootham is especially ideal if you’re a travelling football fan wanting to watch York City: in the days before ground sponsorship, Kit Kat Crescent was known as Bootham Crescent.

Addresses in this area include Marygate, St Mary’s, Grosvenor Terrace, Sycamore Terrace, Queen Anne’s Road, Longfield Terrace and North Parade.

The Guy Fawkes Hotel in York City Centre

The Guy Fawkes Hotel in York City Centre

York City Centre
Beware any hotel advertising itself as City Centre; the phrase can mean anything from Clifton to Tang Hall. Check on a map: if it’s within the city walls then I’d say it’s city centre, otherwise I’d cross-reference it with one of the other areas here to find out exactly where you’ll be staying.

Most of the major hotel chains have a presence in York City Centre and several of the budget variety have sprung up in the last few years, so finding something cheap and close to the action should be fairly easy.

Micklegate and Piccadilly are the main areas for these kinds of hotels: ideal locations if you’re in York on a stag or hen do or just planning to enjoy its nightlife.

Holgate
The main drag between Micklegate Bar, York’s historic southern gate, and the suburb of Acomb is another popular location for small hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and guesthouses.

Holgate is very handy for the Knavesmire, York Racecourse, and easy to get to from both the A64 and the train station. It’s not the most picturesque location in York and contains one of York’s few hills – beware if you’re planning on doing a lot of walking.

Tadcaster Road and Dringhouses
Tadcaster Road is the swishest address for hotels in York, principally because of its proximity to the racecourse. Legends abound in York about entire floors being booked by David Beckham during Ebor week; the same myths that probably do the rounds in Chester or Newmarket.

Which side of the racecourse a hotel is on makes a big difference to how near it is to the city centre or the rail station. If they put Dringhouses in their address they’re on the south side of the Knavesmire and you’ll need a bus or taxi to get into town. Even if they don’t advertise their location as Dringhouses it’s worth checking the address on a map before booking.

Acomb
Few York tourist brochures mention Acomb and with good reason: it’s the basic northern town that all of York would be if it didn’t have a huge cathedral and a tourist industry.

Still, if you’re visiting York on a budget there’s nothing wrong with staying in Acomb: it enjoys good bus services into town and to the rail station and, like most of York, is a safe, low-crime area.

It’s also handy for the races, although you’ll realistically need a taxi to and from the racecourse.

Heworth
There’s a scattering of small guesthouses and B&Bs on the Stockton Lane-Heworth Green-Monkgate route into York, making it a reasonable option for people wanting to stay in York.

Heworth is a handy area for visiting the city centre, with most parts of it less than a half-hour walk from the Minster. It’s the other side of town from the train station, though, and completely the wrong side of York for the racecourse. Still, that’s why God gave us taxis.

Fishergate and Fulford
The mainly residential areas of Fishergate and Fulford offer a range of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs and are ideal for people visiting the University of York.

Fulford is easily accessed from the A64 and A19 although traffic can be bad at peak times. The area is a good bus or taxi ride from the station.
